Helsinki Airport hit hard as Finnair cancels flights over upcoming strike
Finland’s Finnair largest airline and national flag carrier has cancelled around 100 flights in response to a planned strike by the Finnish Aviation Union scheduled for May 5, marking a significant disruption in operations at Helsinki Airport.
The airline warned of major scheduling issues during the four-hour strike, which is expected to occur in rotating shifts throughout the day, Caliber.Az reports, citing Finnair's message.
The industrial action will affect both domestic and international flights. Finnair has proactively contacted approximately 7,500 affected passengers, offering alternative travel options and urging customers to check real-time updates through its official website or mobile app.
The carrier also cautioned that the strike may cause delays in baggage handling and other ground services. As a precaution, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport earlier than usual and to pack essential items, such as medications and documents, in their carry-on luggage.
Founded in 1923, Finnair is one of the world’s oldest operating airlines. The airline operates primarily out of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and is known for its strategic focus on connecting Europe and Asia via the shortest northern routes.
