Poland to cut defence spending to 4.5% of GDP in 2027

Polish authorities plan to allocate 198 billion zlotys ($53.5 billion), or 4.5% of GDP, to defence spending in 2027, down by 2 billion zlotys ($537 million) from the 2026 figure, Polish Minister of Finance Andrzej Domański has stated.

Speaking at a press conference on the 2027 draft budget, he said Poland would remain among NATO’s leading countries in terms of defence spending, at 4.5% of GDP, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

This marks the first time in recent years that Poland’s defence budget has not increased and has instead been slightly reduced.

The government allocated 200 billion zlotys ($54 billion) for defence in 2026, compared with 186 billion zlotys ($50 billion) in 2025 and 159 billion zlotys ($43 billion) in 2024.

A week earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had announced plans to spend 5% of GDP on defence in 2027.
