Governor Abbott has dispatched Texas National Guard troops to San Antonio ahead of scheduled protests targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The deployment comes amid rising tensions surrounding recent immigration enforcement actions and broader dissatisfaction with federal immigration policies.
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) confirmed that Governor Abbott authorized the deployment, though local authorities have not been provided with specific operational details. The Guard’s presence marks the first such deployment to the Alamo City by Abbott, who has previously concentrated state military resources along the southern border under Operation Lone Star—a multibillion-dollar initiative aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
Anti-ICE demonstrations are planned for June 11 evening in downtown San Antonio. According to organizers, the protest was prompted by reports that ICE agents had arrested migrants immediately following the dismissal of their immigration court cases. These arrests have sparked outrage among advocacy groups and prompted a wave of peaceful protests over the past week.
In addition to June 11 events, activists are organizing a large-scale demonstration on June 14 titled the “No-Kings Nationwide Day of Defiance.” The protest, scheduled from 5 pm to 8 pm at Travis Park, is expected to coincide with President Trump’s military parade in Washington, DC, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the US Army. The DC celebration, featuring military vehicles and aircraft, is projected to cost $45 million.
Organizers of the San Antonio protest have warned participants to be prepared for potential clashes. In guidance shared via social media, they advised demonstrators to “prepare for exposure to tear gas and carry first-aid kits.”
City officials have emphasized their commitment to balancing the right to peaceful protest with the need to maintain public order.
“The city’s plan is to support peaceful demonstrations while ensuring public safety,” officials stated.
