Trump, Putin hold lengthy call on Ukraine strikes, Iran nuclear threat

05 June 2025 09:12

US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4, discussing the ongoing war in Ukraine and the growing tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the call lasted "approximately one hour and 15 minutes" and covered several key international issues, Caliber.Az reports.

“We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides,” Trump wrote, referring to recent hostilities in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate peace.”

According to Trump, President Putin expressed a firm stance on responding to the recent Ukrainian strikes. “President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,” Trump noted.

The two leaders also touched on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump said he had made clear to Putin that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” and claimed both sides shared this view. “On this, I believe that we were in agreement,” he added.

Trump stated that Putin had offered to play a role in negotiations with Tehran. “President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion.”

Trump criticised Iran’s approach to the nuclear issue, accusing it of delaying a decision. “It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time,” he said.

According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Trump asked Russia to assist in advancing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

“Donald Trump believes that Russian assistance may be necessary in the context of US-Iran negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, and he would appreciate it if Russia could engage accordingly with the Iranian side,” Ushakov said.
