IAEA director maintains regular communication with Iran on inspections

19 November 2025 16:30

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is in regular contact with Iran to fully restore its inspection activities in the Islamic Republic, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told the agency’s Board of Governors that inspectors have returned to Iran and have already carried out checks at facilities unaffected by the June attacks, but said a full resumption of inspections will require greater cooperation from Tehran, Caliber.Az reports, citing IAEA official website.

He noted that the agency continues working toward fully reinstating standard verification procedures.

Grossi, who is in frequent contact with senior Iranian officials, is urging them to grant inspectors access to the affected facilities, especially those holding low- and high-enriched uranium material, which he says must be clarified without delay.

The IAEA Director added that he would return to the matter later in his statement.

Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA has steadily eroded since 2021, when Tehran curtailed additional monitoring measures and removed surveillance equipment, leaving the Agency unable to maintain full oversight of its nuclear activities.

The situation worsened after US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025 disrupted key sites and blocked inspectors from verifying the status of enriched-uranium stocks, including material enriched up to 60 percent.

The IAEA has since warned it cannot confirm the size or location of Iran’s current uranium inventory, stressing that full access to affected facilities is essential to restore “continuity of knowledge” and ensure the programme remains peaceful.
