Ford recalls 1.4 million F-150 trucks in US over sudden downshift risk
Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1.4 million Ford F-150 vehicles in the United States following an investigation into reports of unexpected downshifting, regulators said on April 17.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the issue has been linked to at least one accident and two potentially related injuries. As part of the recall, Ford dealers will update the trucks’ powertrain control module software to address the problem, Reuters reports
The investigation initially began in March 2025, focusing on 2015–2017 F-150 models equipped with the 6R80 transmission after multiple complaints from drivers. Earlier this year, the probe was expanded as more reports emerged.
Ford has indicated that the issue may stem from electrical connections deteriorating over time due to heat and vibration. This can result in a loss of signal from the transmission range sensor, potentially causing the vehicle to shift gears unexpectedly.
Regulators said inaccurate signals from the system are likely responsible for the unintended downshifts, raising safety concerns for drivers on the road.
