Trump reiterates commitment to annexing Greenland, says military force not excluded
In a wide-ranging interview on March 29, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to acquiring Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory.
When asked about his intentions, Trump stated, “We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” signaling his determination to pursue the acquisition despite Denmark’s control over the territory, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Trump indicated that while a peaceful negotiation might be possible, he did not rule out the use of military force in securing Greenland, adding, “I don’t take anything off the table.” He emphasized that securing Greenland was crucial for international peace, security, and strength, pointing out the growing presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the area.
The president’s comments come a day after Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland and criticized Denmark’s handling of the territory. Vance, accompanied by his wife, Usha, visited the US Space Force base at Pituffik, located on Greenland’s northwestern coast, and conveyed a message to Denmark, stating, “You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland.”
Trump further explained that acquiring Greenland would enhance the United States' strategic position, with an eye on global security concerns. He dismissed the notion of international backlash, stating, “I don’t really care” about how Russia or other nations might view the move.
The US has long held strategic interests in Greenland, given its location in the Arctic and proximity to Russia. Trump's remarks are part of an ongoing effort to strengthen US influence in the region, following previous tensions over Denmark's reluctance to sell the territory.
The president’s comments have sparked renewed debate over the future of Greenland, with critics raising concerns over the implications of such a move on international relations and the potential use of military force. However, Trump’s unwavering stance signals that Greenland remains a key element of his geopolitical agenda.
