Media: At least 19 Russian generals killed since Ukraine invasion PHOTO

09 January 2026 19:35

Since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least 19 Russian generals have reportedly been killed, The Insider reports.

Official confirmation from Moscow has been inconsistent, highlighting the opaque nature of senior military losses.

Casualties among Russia’s senior command have occurred both on the front lines and in rear positions, including strikes on headquarters, sabotage operations, and explosions on Russian territory. Some generals were also killed by direct enemy fire early in the conflict.

The first confirmed general to die was Major General Andriy Sukhovetsky in 2022, who was killed by a sniper’s bullet during the occupation of Chernihiv Oblast. Following him, other generals reportedly killed included Oleg Mityayev, Volodymyr Frolov, Andriy Simonov, Kanamat Botashev, and Roman Kutuzov.

Open-source reporting indicates that some figures, such as Major General Andriy Kolesnikov, initially reported dead in 2022, were later seen alive in 2023, serving in new posts including as deputy commander of Russian forces in Syria.

In 2023, additional generals reported killed included Dmytro Ulianov, Serhiy Goryachev, Oleh Tsokov, and Volodymyr Zavadskyi. In 2024 and 2025, notable losses included Igor Kirillov, head of the NBC Protection Troops; Yaroslav Moskalyk, deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff; Mikhail Gudkov, deputy commander of the Russian Navy; and Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s Directorate of Operational Training.

Some of the deceased were retired or serving in volunteer and assault units, including formations such as “Storm Z” and private military companies. In December 2025, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov reportedly died in a car explosion in Moscow.
