Trump says Greenland takeover needed for "world peace"

29 March 2025 16:00

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his belief that the United States must take control of Greenland to ensure “world peace” and bolster international security, doubling down on his controversial ambitions to annex the strategically important, resource-rich territory of Denmark.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump emphasized that his call was not for US peace alone, but for “world peace,” underscoring the role Greenland could play in global security, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

“We are talking about international security,” Trump said. “This is not just about peace for the United States; it's about peace for the world.”

The President’s comments come amid a diplomatic row between the US and Denmark over the fate of Greenland, which has been simmering since Trump first floated the idea of annexation. Relations have been strained further after a recent visit by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his wife and other senior US officials, to an American military base in Greenland on March 27.

The trip, initially planned without consultation with Greenland or Denmark, was scaled back following public outcry from both Greenlanders and Danes. Despite the controversy, Vance addressed US troops stationed at the base, underscoring the importance of Arctic security and warning that if the US did not take the lead in the region, rivals such as China and Russia would seize the opportunity.

“We have to be involved in the Arctic,” Vance said during his brief address, which was followed by a lunch with US service members. “If we don’t, other powers will take control, and we cannot allow that.”

This visit marks a new chapter in the growing tensions between the US and Denmark over Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous Danish territory. Trump’s repeated suggestions that the US should control Greenland have alarmed both Greenlanders and the Danish government, who view the territory as an integral part of their sovereignty.

Greenland, with its vast untapped mineral resources and strategic location in the Arctic, has become increasingly important in the face of rising geopolitical competition in the region. The US has long maintained a military presence in Greenland, but Trump’s calls for formal control over the territory have raised concerns about the future of US-Danish relations and the balance of power in the Arctic.

For the record, Denmark has firmly rejected any suggestion that Greenland should be ceded to the United States, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen labeling the idea as "absurd."
