Uganda sees growing Ebola outbreak as confirmed cases increase
Uganda’s Ministry of Health confirmed two additional Ebola cases on Monday, May 25, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to seven, according to dpa.
The ministry said the new infections were detected among two employees of a private hospital in the capital, Kampala. Both are receiving treatment, while all their contacts are under monitoring.
Previously, the first case in Kampala was recorded in a woman who had arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an outbreak began in mid-May. She was diagnosed with Ebola after seeking medical care for abdominal pain.
The initial cases were laboratory-confirmed on May 15. The World Health Organisation (WHO) later declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
According to the latest data, hundreds of suspected cases and more than 100 confirmed infections have been recorded.
Ebola remains a severe and highly contagious disease, and the current outbreak is complicated by the presence of the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no specific vaccine or targeted treatment.
