UK set to sue China over "shocking" rights violations
Foreign Minister Liz Truss has said that the UK intends to hold China accountable for human rights violations in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
Truss added that London had received new evidence of such violations, TASS reports.
"Today, shocking new details of China's human rights violations in Xinjiang have emerged, which are added to the already existing large volume of evidence obtained from Chinese government documents, eyewitness testimony, satellite images and visits to the region by our diplomats," Truss noted.
The new materials, she said, confirm the "extraordinary volume of China's persecution of Uighur Muslims", severe restrictions on religious freedom by the Chinese authorities, separation of parents from children, forced birth control and widespread detention.
Truss added that the UK, together with international partners, points to the shocking persecution of Uighur Muslims and other minorities. The minister assured that they are committed to holding China accountable.
