Protesters in Morocco call for government resignation
Protesters in Morocco have stepped up demands for the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Hespress reports.
The demonstrations, organised by the youth group GenZ212 through social media, began in the country’s largest cities on September 27. Initially, protesters called for major reforms in education and healthcare, a decisive fight against corruption and unemployment, and guarantees of a decent standard of living for citizens.
A week into the protests, GenZ212 activists escalated their demands, now calling for the resignation of Akhannouch’s government. One peaceful demonstration took place in front of the parliament building on Mohammed V Avenue in Rabat, where protesters urged the dismissal of cabinet members.
Following several days of unrest, including incidents of violence and vandalism, the situation on Moroccan streets has reportedly become relatively calm.
