Ukraine discusses power transit to Europe with Azerbaijan, Türkiye
Ukraine is holding negotiations with Azerbaijan and Türkiye on the transit of electricity to Europe, expanding cooperation with European partners in the field of energy integration, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal has stated.
Speaking at the 31st Baku Energy Forum, Shmyhal said following Ukraine’s accession to the European power system, the country has focused on developing interconnections in both the electricity and gas sectors with the European market, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
He noted that Ukraine’s main focus is currently on developing interconnections in both electricity and gas with the large European market.
“In this context, we have very good cooperation and are holding talks with Azerbaijan and Türkiye on using Ukraine as a European gateway for all types of energy. This is possible thanks to our large gas storage facilities and a very powerful electricity grid,” he added.
Shmyhal made it clear that in the context of war, strengthening the resilience of energy infrastructure has become especially important.
He said the country is decentralizing its electricity generation system, introducing new approaches to energy supply, and expanding gas-fired generation capacity.
In his view, under Ukraine’s energy strategy, gas-fired generation is expected to account for at least 25% of total electricity production in the future.
The minister stressed that oil and gas remain strategically important resources for both Ukraine and Europe, and called on countries in the Caspian region and other partners to expand energy cooperation.
