Azerbaijan, Türkiye eye new energy projects as Baku talks focus on green power

Azerbaijan and Türkiye are coordinating on a new generation of energy projects, including green power exports to Europe and a strategic electricity link between Nakhchivan and Türkiye, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said on September 15.

Bayramov said he held productive talks with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Baku, with energy cooperation featuring prominently in discussions on expanding bilateral economic ties, Caliber.Az correspondent reports.

He highlighted the two countries’ long-standing role in regional energy security through the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor, saying the projects had made a major contribution to the energy security of Azerbaijan, Türkiye and a wider region.

“We believe that at this stage there are new projects with very promising prospects and high potential, aimed at the coming decades,” Bayramov said at a joint press conference. He added that the two countries were currently coordinating their efforts on these initiatives.

Among the projects under discussion, Bayramov singled out cooperation in alternative energy, including plans to transmit electricity generated from renewable sources in Azerbaijan across the Black Sea to Europe.

He also pointed to an energy transit corridor linking Azerbaijan with Georgia, Türkiye and Bulgaria, as well as a planned power cable connecting Nakhchivan with Türkiye, which he described as being of major strategic importance.

“We view the implementation of these projects as new avenues with enormous potential in the field of green energy involving both countries—not only for the markets of Azerbaijan and Türkiye, but also for the transit of alternative energy to the European market via Türkiye,” he emphasised.

The Azerbaijani minister also stressed the importance of the bilateral Intergovernmental Commission, saying that implementation of decisions adopted at its latest meeting in December 2025 would help advance new projects across a broad range of sectors.
