FM: Türkiye closely watching Azerbaijan-Armenia normalisation

15 September 2026 15:23

Türkiye is closely monitoring the process of normalising relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said.

Speaking at a joint briefing with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku, Fidan said the number of joint projects between Türkiye and Azerbaijan was increasing, according to local media.

He said relations between the two countries continued on the basis of the principle of “One nation, two states”.

Fidan said his visit coincided with the 108th anniversary of the liberation of Baku. He added that relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan had been discussed during his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev.

“We emphasise the importance of the effective operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway,” Fidan said, adding that defence cooperation between the two countries also demonstrated their partnership in practice.

He said Türkiye was closely following the normalisation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and continued to support Azerbaijan.

“We want the necessary steps to be taken to develop the region,” Fidan said.

The Turkish foreign minister also spoke about the Kars-Dilucu railway project, saying construction was continuing and would be completed by the end of 2029.

He said the operation of the Middle Corridor served the interests of both Türkiye and Azerbaijan and would also contribute to the development of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) countries.
