UNESCO heritage site at risk as wildfires rage in northwest Spain

11 August 2025 14:02

More than 1,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes in north-western Spain as fast-moving wildfires tore through parts of Castile and Leon, fuelled by scorching temperatures and fierce winds.

Approximately 400 residents were forced to leave their homes in Carucedo and nearby communities, while a further 700 fled towns near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Las Médulas, a culturally significant area now under threat from the advancing flames, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Regional leader Alfonso Mañueco stated that investigators believe arsonists were responsible for deliberately starting multiple fires across Castile and León. “Investigators believe arsonists deliberately started several fires in Castile and Leon,” Mañueco said, underscoring the growing concern over intentional acts during Spain’s most vulnerable fire season.

In response to the rapidly escalating situation, Spain’s Military Emergency Unit deployed 60 soldiers and 20 vehicles to bolster firefighting efforts. Ground teams have been supported by aircraft and bulldozers as emergency services attempt to contain the blazes.

Firefighters are contending with highly volatile conditions, including shifting wind patterns, low humidity, and daytime temperatures nearing 40°C. These factors have significantly complicated containment efforts, with flames spreading unpredictably and quickly.

The fires come amid a severe and prolonged heatwave currently gripping the country, now entering its second week. The regions of Galicia and Navarre have also reported wildfires in recent days, as parched landscapes and record temperatures create ideal conditions for new outbreaks.

Authorities have issued heightened fire risk warnings across much of the country, cautioning that the ongoing heatwave is expected to persist until at least Thursday, further exacerbating the danger.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his appreciation for the work of first responders and emergency personnel. “Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez praised emergency teams while monitoring the wildfire situation across affected regions,” according to official sources.

As wildfires continue to spread and the heatwave shows no immediate signs of abating, officials remain on high alert, urging vigilance and cooperation from residents in at-risk areas.
