US, Germany welcome Türkiye's green light for Sweden's NATO membership
The United States welcomes the outcome of the Turkish parliament's vote to approve Sweden's application to join NATO.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan made the statement while commenting on the news of the Turkish parliament's decision on Sweden's NATO membership, Anadolu reports.
In a post on social networking site X, Sullivan said: "We welcome the outcome of the Turkish parliament's vote to approve Sweden's application to join NATO. This was one of President Biden's top priorities."
Jake Sullivan said that with Sweden as a strong and capable defence partner, NATO will be stronger and the North Atlantic Alliance will be more secure.
Germany also said it welcomed the Swedish Parliament's decision to approve Sweden's application to join NATO.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a post on social media X, stressed that the parliament's decision to approve Sweden's accession to NATO was important and correct. "This decision strengthens our alliance. We hope that Sweden will be able to officially join the Atlantic Alliance very soon," the chancellor said.
German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said in a written statement that the German government welcomed the Turkish parliament's decision to approve Sweden's NATO membership.
Hebestreit said Sweden's imminent accession would further strengthen the NATO alliance as a whole.
