Germany’s newly appointed chancellor highlights Türkiye's vital role in NATO
Germany's newly appointed Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has stated that Türkiye is an extremely valuable and important NATO partner for Germany.
Merz pledged to strengthen cooperation with Türkiye, emphasising its crucial strategic role within NATO, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
Speaking at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels on May 9, Merz stated, "I will do everything I can to maintain and further expand this partnership."
Merz highlighted Türkiye’s role in safeguarding a critical region within NATO territory, emphasising that its strategic contributions are indispensable for the alliance's security and stability.
The discussions between Merz and Rutte focused on Türkiye’s significant involvement in NATO operations and its ongoing contributions to regional peace and security.
In addition to strengthening bilateral relations, Merz confirmed plans to visit Ankara in the near future, following an invitation extended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This visit is expected to further deepen ties and foster closer cooperation between Germany and Türkiye within the NATO framework.
