US, Lithuania sign deal for second HIMARS battery
The United States and Lithuania have signed an additional agreement for the procurement of a second battery of HIMARS, further expanding Vilnius’s artillery capabilities.
According to the announcement by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, the agreement was concluded between the US government and Lithuania’s Defence Resources Agency.
Under the updated contract, the Lithuanian Armed Forces will receive additional launchers, combat and training munitions, as well as command and communication systems. The package also includes logistics support and training programs for personnel.
Robertas Kaunas stated that the United States has committed to delivering the first HIMARS battery later this year. He emphasised that the additional procurement is intended to strengthen Lithuania’s defence capabilities, reinforce deterrence, and improve interoperability with allied forces along NATO’s eastern flank.
The initial agreement for the acquisition of HIMARS systems was signed in 2022 and included provisions for integrating the systems into NATO’s missile defence architecture, as well as the training of military personnel.
The total value of contracts covering both the first and second HIMARS batteries is estimated at approximately $778 million. The systems are being supplied by Lockheed Martin.
While awaiting delivery, Lithuanian troops have already completed training with support from a US HIMARS unit deployed in the country.
