US military build-up in Middle East heightens tensions with Iran
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, the United States has increased its military presence, deploying B-52 bombers, fighter jets, refuelling aircraft, and destroyers.
This mobilization aims to send a clear message to Iran and its allies amid ongoing conflicts, particularly between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is expected to leave the region by mid-November, prompting the Pentagon to consider sending additional destroyers to fill the gap.
Following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets on October 26, 2024, Tehran has asserted its right to defend itself, describing the strikes as violations of international law. Iranian officials, including members of parliament, have threatened a “very painful” retaliation, with Esmail Kowsari of the National Security Committee emphasizing that Iran’s response will be calculated and executed at the right moment.
Hezbollah, allied with Iran, has condemned the Israeli strikes, launching around 80 rockets into Israel and further escalating regional tensions. While the US and its European allies call for de-escalation, Iran and its allies remain on high alert, poised for potential retaliatory actions that could target both Israeli and American interests.
The increased US military presence has raised concerns among regional powers. Russia views the buildup as a threat to its influence and may bolster its support for Iran and Syria. Türkiye, closely monitoring developments due to its interests in Syria and Iraq, is also apprehensive about the potential impact on its national security.
The situation poses significant risks, including the possibility of a broader military conflict, the emergence of new terrorist groups, and destabilization of the region. Heightened conflict could lead to humanitarian crises, including refugee waves and human rights violations. The long-standing historical conflicts in the region make any resolution particularly challenging, underscoring the urgent need for effective mediation to prevent further escalation.
