US nears agreement to acquire Greenland, says Trump
US President Donald Trump said that a framework agreement for the United States to acquire Greenland is close to being finalised.
Speaking to journalists, Trump emphasised that negotiations have begun and everything is almost agreed, Caliber.Az reports.
“We have started a negotiation, and I think it's pretty well agreed to. I mean, they want us to do it. I think it's going to be a good deal for everybody. Very important deal, actually, from a national security point of view. Very, very important deal. I think we're going to make a deal there,” he noted.
Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, arguing that the US requires it for security and strategic resources.
However, leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the proposal, insisting the territory is not for sale.
Greenland’s strategic importance stems from its Arctic location, which hosts US military facilities and lies along key transatlantic routes, making Trump’s acquisition argument centered on both US and global security.
