US plans to develop new anti-ship missile by 2024
The US Navy Command has awarded Lockheed Martin a $32 million contract to develop, integrate and test the AGM-158C-2 long-range anti-ship missile (LRASM).
"The work, which will be performed in Orlando, Florida, and Alabama, is scheduled to be completed by July 2024," the Shephard Media reports.
The US Navy now has a long-range LRASM AGM-158C anti-ship missile in service. The missile has been put into low-volume production. In December 2018, it was accepted into initial service by the U.S. Air Force as a weapon system for B-1B strategic bombers. The LRASM missile is a development of the low-production JASSM cruise missile. Its fuselage meets the requirements of reduced radar visibility, the missile is propelled by a turbofan engine and has a range of up to 1,000 km. The missile is equipped with a 454 kg high-explosive warhead.
