Vardanyan`s murder - Armenian torpedo into negotiation process Delimitation possible without Yerevan

30 May 2022 12:49

The other day, Caliber.Az reported on the highly emotional and illogical reaction of the Armenian Foreign Ministry to the statements of President Ilham Aliyev made in the liberated Zangilan. In his article published on our website, the author analyzed one by one claims of Armenian diplomats to Azerbaijan, which can be viewed as provocative, aimed to break the recent agreements of the leaders of two countries in Brussels.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry did not stop there, however, and spun off yet another round of this endless spiral of aggravation. In particular, since yesterday the story about the soldier Davit Vardanyan who was allegedly killed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been widely spread in the Armenian media. Naturally, another shrill and irritating statement from the Foreign Ministry immediately followed.

Presenting the incident as "a blatant violation of the ceasefire by Azerbaijan" and, as always, appealing to the world community, Yerevan insists no less than on the withdrawal of troops from the border, deployment of an observer mission, general condemnation of "Baku's actions" and other threatening actions. That is, in fact, it demands to cross out all the post-war agreements with Azerbaijan, adopted, by the way, not only by mutual consent but with the direct participation of Moscow and Brussels.

The editorial office of Caliber.Az turned to military sources with regard to the border "incident". The information was clarified through several channels and no one and nowhere confirmed the exchange of fire on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border on May 28.

It's possible that the Armenian side lost one of its servicemen that day for some reason. But even if it's true, the loss was clearly non-combat.

At the same time the Armenian Foreign Ministry, as well as the world community, should be reminded that on May 26, official Baku returned soldier Eduard Arturovich Martirosov to Yerevan in continuation of the positive Brussels process. And what is the point of Azerbaijan to liquidate another Armenian soldier a couple of days after that? There is a logical inconsistency here.

So what are the aims and purposes of the unconstructive statements of the Armenian Foreign Ministry and the disinformation spread about the killing of the Armenian soldier by the Azerbaijani side? The answer is obvious: it is another attempt to derail the positively developing process which started in Moscow and continued in Brussels. Moreover, it is not just to torpedo the agreements that have begun to become reality, but also to shift responsibility for this to Azerbaijan.

Even if we do not discount the factor of growing internal nervousness of the Armenian authorities because of the incessant "opposition rallies," although their scale is far from creating real problems for Pashinyan, such outbursts of the Armenian side against Azerbaijan are quite alarming.

No matter how it is presented, there is one goal - to slow down the work of the recently formed commissions on border demarcation/demarcation, to add new issues to their agenda (for example, "investigation of incidents"), to postpone the main thing - recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the final rejection of claims to Karabakh.

Armenia, according to politicians and international lawyers, after its defeat in the war aimed at the de-occupation of foreign territories, can be considered an object, not a subject of international relations. That is, the subjects of international law can implement a number of international legal decisions and actions that are not exclusively within the internal competence of this state, without entering into legal relations with it. Unfortunately, no agreements with Yerevan are worth the paper on which they are signed, since they are practically not supported by concrete measures. And this means that the time has come to take concrete steps to normalize the situation in the region without its involvement. The process of border clarification should certainly continue, but it should be based only on international legal acts, without any regard for Armenia's endless conditions and provocations. As it was undertaken last November. And the responsibility for possible tension in the Armenian-Azerbaijani borderland will be borne by the Armenian side and those who provoke Azerbaijan.
