White House: Türkiye-Syria relations under US scrutiny
The US administration will closely watch any attempts at normalizing relations between Syria and Türkiye but remains sceptical based on past experiences.
John Kirby, the White House National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator, made remarks at a recent briefing, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
"We've seen reports about this. It won't surprise you that we would redirect you to [Turkish President Tayyip] Erdogan to comment on that," he stressed when asked about Washington's assessment of the possibility of normalising ties between the two countries. - There have been similar reports in the past, but it didn't lead to anything. We will wait and see what unfolds now. Each country must handle its foreign relations independently."
Vedant Patel, deputy head of the State Department's press office, commented on July 2 on information about possible talks between the Syrian and Turkish authorities.
He stressed that Washington does not plan to normalize ties with Damascus and is conveying this stance to regional partners, including Ankara.
