Trump could attend Beijing summit with Xi, Putin amid trade thaw
A series of recent trade agreements between Washington and Beijing has signaled a notable shift in US President Donald Trump’s approach toward China, following a period marked by fierce criticism.
The warming ties have prompted speculation that Trump could be invited to a high-level summit in Beijing this September, alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Caliber.Az repoorts via The Times.
A potential visit by Trump would mark a significant reversal from his earlier accusations against China, particularly over trade imbalances and alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
Beijing has announced plans to hold a large military parade on September 3 in Tiananmen Square to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Putin has already accepted an invitation to attend the commemorative event.
During the war, the United States and China fought as allies against Japanese militarism, a historical context that some Chinese analysts believe could provide a diplomatic backdrop for a symbolic gathering of the three leaders.
“Why not align Trump’s visit with the September 3 parade?” Jin Canrong, one of China’s most prominent nationalist commentators, said in an interview with Guancha, a Shanghai-based news website. “From 1941 to 1945, China and the US were allies against Japanese militarism.
“If President Trump visits China and attends the parade on September 3, it would send a strong, positive signal to the world. The image of the Chinese, Russian and American leaders standing together could be a powerful message of peace and stability.”
Such a summit would likely appeal to Trump’s highly personalized style of diplomacy. Analysts suggest it would also provide reassurance to both Xi and Putin, who have previously observed how Trump has publicly rebuked foreign leaders visiting Washington.
A Beijing-based summit could give Xi and Putin more control over the agenda and the messaging surrounding the event.
