Romanian president: Unification with Moldova must reflect will of people
During his visit to Berlin, Romanian President Nicușor Dan reiterated his personal support for the potential unification of Romania and Moldova — while stressing that any such move must reflect the democratic will of Moldovan citizens.
Speaking in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Dan referred to the historical precedent of 1918 and a 2018 resolution by the Romanian Parliament, which declared that Romania would be ready to unify if Moldova expressed the same readiness, Caliber.Az reports.
“About 35 percent of Moldovans support unification today,” Dan noted. “As long as a significant part of Moldova’s population supports the current state structure, Romania will take no action.”
While reaffirming his personal belief in the idea of reunification, Dan was clear that Bucharest would not pursue any steps without broad support in Chişinău.
“I personally wish for unification with Moldova,” he said, “but I fully respect the will of the people in the neighbouring republic.”
The president also emphasised Romania’s commitment to supporting Moldova in practical terms, pointing to existing gas and electricity connections and planned infrastructure projects.
Romania has taken a proactive role in strengthening regional stability, especially in light of rising Russian threats to Moldova and other countries in the region.
