Media: Israel to send aid to Suwayda’s Druze in southern Syria

18 July 2025 13:56

Israeli Foreign Minister Gidion Sa’ar has announced the urgent transfer of humanitarian aid to the Druze population in Syria’s Suwayda province amid escalating clashes between Druze and Bedouin tribal forces.

As Syrian government troops prepare to redeploy to the restive, Druze-majority city to quell the violence, Sa’ar said Israel is stepping in to "support civilians impacted by the fighting," Caliber.Az reports via The Jerusalem Post.

"The aid package, valued at 2 million NIS [$594.8 thousands], will include, among other things, food packages, medical supplies, first aid kits, and medications. The aid will be provided from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' budget," Sa’ar wrote in a statement issued July 18.

"The aid will be specifically directed to the Druze areas in the Suwayda province that have been directly affected by the violent attacks against the Druze."

According to Israeli officials, the government has also issued warnings to Damascus, demanding that Syrian forces withdraw from the southern region and vowing to prevent any attempt by “Islamist rulers” to entrench themselves near Israeli borders.

On July 18, Israeli forces struck a convoy of Bedouin fighters travelling along the Palmyra-Homs highway toward Suwayda, according to Israel’s Kan News. The attack came just two days after a separate Israeli airstrike targeted the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The Bedouin offensive, launched late on July 18, continued despite the earlier withdrawal of Syrian forces from Suwayda. The violence follows a failed bid by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to stabilize the region after a deadly flare-up that reportedly left hundreds dead.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Damascus, said local sources confirmed that residents in Suwayda had appealed for assistance.

“Bedouin tribes live in this predominantly Druze province, but they appealed to other tribes in other provinces to come help and join the fight,” she reported, citing a source in Syria’s Interior Ministry.
