Germany says ties with US remain strong despite Trump criticism
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has sought to reaffirm the strength of transatlantic ties, stating that relations with the United States remain solid despite recent tensions triggered by public exchanges between political leaders.
In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Wadephul said that the alliance between Europe and the United States continues to demonstrate resilience, even amid political disagreements and sharp rhetoric from US President Donald Trump.
The minister also came to the defence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who faced criticism from Trump following remarks about the war with Iran. Wadephul clarified that Merz’s statements were intended as a message to Tehran, urging it not to provoke the United States and to return to negotiations without delay.
Earlier, Merz said that the United States had “entered the war without a clear strategy,” while also accusing Iran’s leadership of prolonging the negotiation process. His comments prompted a strong response from Trump, who sharply criticised the German chancellor and warned that Washington could reduce its military presence in Germany.
Despite the exchange, Wadephul stressed that Berlin continues to maintain close coordination with Washington and underscored the importance of the bilateral relationship.
“Americans have politically realised that they can rely on Germany in difficult times. In our contacts with Washington, we receive confirmation that our role is valued,” the minister said.
