Russian drone briefly enters Romanian airspace, Bucharest says

02 May 2026 11:07

A Russian drone briefly entered Romanian airspace overnight as Moscow carried out attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, Romania’s Ministry of Defence said.

According to the ministry, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 2. At approximately 2:00 a.m., two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from Fetești airbase after radar systems detected a group of around 20 drones heading toward the Ukrainian city of Izmail, close to Romania’s border.

Authorities issued a public warning in Tulcea County through the RO-Alert emergency system as a precaution.

Radar data later confirmed a short-lived breach of Romanian airspace in the Kilia area. The drone subsequently continued its trajectory back toward Ukrainian territory.

The alert was lifted at around 2:50 a.m., and no further incidents were reported.

Romania’s Ministry of Defence said it is continuing to inform allied countries about the situation and remains in constant contact with its NATO partners.
