Pilot killed in mid-air collision near Baden-Baden
A mid-air collision between a powered aircraft and a glider near the city of Baden-Baden in Germany has left one pilot dead and another seriously injured, according to a report by Spiegel.
The incident occurred around midday on Friday, May 1. Police said the 66-year-old pilot of the glider was able to eject following the collision and was subsequently hospitalised with serious injuries. The 53-year-old pilot of the powered aircraft was killed and later recovered from the wreckage.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion at the time of the crash, after which debris fell onto a nearby meadow.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The case is being handled by the criminal police in coordination with Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation.
The crash site has been secured, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly motorists who may have been travelling along the Autobahn A5 in the Baden-Baden area at the time of the incident.
