Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan passes away at 71
Hulk Hogan, one of the most iconic figures in professional wrestling history, has died at the age of 71.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Hogan’s Clearwater, Florida residence early morning of July 24, following a reported cardiac arrest, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Authorities arrived at Hogan’s home at 9:51 AM, where a significant police and emergency medical presence was observed. Hogan was carried out on a stretcher and transported to a nearby hospital by Clearwater Fire & Rescue personnel. Despite efforts to save him, Hogan was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police plan to provide further details during a press conference scheduled later on July 24.
In recent weeks, rumors regarding Hogan’s health had circulated widely. Just weeks ago, his wife Sky, whom he married in September 2023, refuted claims that he was in a coma, stating his heart was “strong” as he recovered from surgeries. Last month, TMZ reported that Hogan was battling complications following a neck procedure he underwent in May, though he was not believed to be on his “deathbed.”
Hulk Hogan’s impact on professional wrestling was transformative. Before his rise, wrestling appealed to a relatively niche audience. However, Hogan’s charismatic theatrics and larger-than-life persona captivated children and adults alike, redefining wrestling as a family entertainment phenomenon.
The genesis of “Hulkamania” came in 1984, when Hogan defeated the Iron Sheik to capture the World Heavyweight Championship. This moment sparked a cultural sensation that endured for decades, with his signature bandana and handlebar mustache becoming emblematic of the era.
In 1996, Hogan reinvented himself by turning from a hero into a villain, founding the New World Order (NWO) and adopting the persona of Hollywood Hulk Hogan. This pivot propelled both Hogan and professional wrestling to unprecedented heights of popularity.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hogan delivered countless memorable performances, including legendary matches against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at WrestleMania X8 in 2002 and the historic face-off with Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III. He also engaged in high-profile rivalries with Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage.
