Zelenskyy, Macron sign air defence, Rafale fighter deal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron have signed what has been described as a “historic agreement” establishing long-term cooperation between the two countries.
The leaders signed a letter of intent, the full details of which have not yet been disclosed, though Zelenskyy previously referred to it as “historic,” Caliber.Az reports per French media.
The signing took place at a table set on the runway of Villacoublay Air Base, with fighter jets and air defence systems forming the backdrop.
The agreement includes Ukraine’s order of 100 French Rafale fighter jets.
Moreover, Ukraine and Sweden signed a letter of intent on October 22 for the potential supply of up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets over the next decade, with first deliveries expected in 2026.
The agreement was signed in Linköping, home to Saab, the manufacturer of the Gripen jets. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed that the deal marks the start of a long-term programme rather than immediate deliveries, citing limited production capacity for the latest variant.
“A strong and capable Ukraine is a key priority for Sweden,” Kristersson said, adding that the aircraft would help Kyiv defend against Russian aggression. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the Gripen jets as “one of the most effective elements” for strengthening Ukraine’s defence.
