Zelenskyy says Ukraine open to talks "in any format" before Trump-Putin call
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered a measured response to the upcoming call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, reiterating that Ukraine has long supported American efforts to advance peace.
Speaking at a joint press conference with EU leaders and the President of the European Council in the Danish city of Orhus, Zelenskyy was asked about his expectations regarding the phone call announced by Trump earlier in the day, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
“I don’t think they have much in common to talk about, because they are very different people,” Zelenskyy said, referring to Trump and Putin.
Addressing the issue of Ukraine directly, the President recalled that his government had supported Trump’s earlier proposal for an unconditional ceasefire.
“From the very beginning, we backed President Trump’s idea of an unconditional ceasefire. I’ve repeatedly stated that we are open to talks in any format. And since, as I see it, only Putin seems to make decisions in Russia, a meeting at the leadership level is necessary — if we genuinely want to achieve peace,” Zelenskyy said.
He also mentioned that he plans to discuss the resumption of U.S. deliveries of Patriot missiles with Trump in a separate conversation scheduled to take place in the coming days.
The last known conversation between the two took place on June 14, amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.
