Germany to deploy Bundeswehr personnel to Israel to monitor Gaza ceasefire
Germany will send three Bundeswehr soldiers to Israel to help monitor compliance with the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, the German Defence Ministry confirmed, according to Tagesschau.
The contingent will consist of two officers and one brigadier general, who will travel to Israel next week. They will carry out their duties “in uniform but without weapons,” the ministry noted.
The German personnel will be stationed at the U.S.-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre in southern Israel, which is expected to host approximately 200 military staff once fully operational. Construction of the centre is still ongoing.
Their primary responsibilities will include monitoring the truce, clearing signs of hostilities, and coordinating the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the centre is intended to provide training and logistical support for a future stabilisation force outlined in the U.S. administration’s plan for Middle East peace. This force is envisioned to operate directly within Gaza, overseeing the planned disarmament of Hamas and maintaining security on the ground.
Next week, European Union leaders are set to discuss potential ways to join and support President Trump’s peace initiative.
The ceasefire agreement stems from an international summit hosted by Egypt on October 13, attended by representatives from the United States, Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and European leaders. During the summit, U.S. President Donald Trump and the participating countries signed a document officially ending the war in Gaza.
Trump previously declared the conflict in Gaza officially over. He also warned that if Hamas fails to honour the peace agreement, he would consider authorising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume military operations in the region.
