Netherlands bans sale and use of consumer fireworks

25 July 2026 17:58

The Netherlands will enact a nationwide ban prohibiting the sale, purchase, and private use of consumer fireworks starting August 1, 2026, codifying a permanent shift in how the country celebrates the New Year, Dutch media reports.

The legislation, originally initiated as a joint proposal by GroenLinks–PvdA (Progressive Netherlands) and the Party for the Animals, has formally received approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The permanent measure follows years of intense lobbying from healthcare professionals, police unions, and emergency services highlighting severe injuries, widespread property destruction, and animal distress during traditional New Year's Eve festivities. Public opinion surveys indicate that approximately 75 per cent of Dutch residents support the ban.

Under the statutory provisions, exemptions remain available for accredited local foundations and community associations seeking permits to organise controlled, professional-grade firework displays under strict safety guidelines. However, municipal implementation faces immediate hurdles. Several major local authorities — including Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Delft — have already announced that they will decline to issue display permits, citing critical shortages of inspection personnel and potential safety risks to staff.
