Zelenskyy, Starmer discuss pathways to substantive diplomacy with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, focusing on security guarantees, drone production investments, and enhancing military support.
In a statement, Zelenskyy described the discussion as “a good, productive meeting” and emphasised ongoing coordination between Ukraine and the UK, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
The leaders reviewed expectations for a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska, considering possible outcomes and the prospects for substantive diplomacy with Moscow.
“Together with our partners, it is vital to establish effective frameworks for security. We need to ensure lasting peace, should the US succeed in bringing Russia to substantive negotiations,” Zelenskyy said.
The meeting also covered ongoing programmes supporting Ukraine’s armed forces and defence industry. Zelenskyy highlighted discussions on weapons delivery options, including the PURL programme, inviting UK participation.
He also referenced a century-long bilateral agreement, which Ukraine plans to ratify this month, paving the way for an expanded Ukraine–UK meeting.
A key topic was investment in Ukraine’s drone production, which Zelenskyy described as strategically crucial on the frontlines.
“We have significant potential to scale production, but urgently need funding. Investment in drone manufacturing can materially impact the strategic situation,” he said.
