Hungary has no plans to abandon Russian gas supplies

04 June 2023 16:00

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said Hungary does not intend to give up Russian gas.

The transition to liquefied natural gas will not compensate the European Union for the reduction of Russian gas imports, Gazeta.Ru quotes the minister as saying.

According to Szijjártó, the energy crisis can be overcome only by diversifying supplies of carriers and creating infrastructure for liquefied gas.

On June 2, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban conceded that Recep Tayyip Erdogan's victory in the Turkish elections would guarantee that Russian gas would continue to flow uninterrupted through the Turkish Stream pipeline to Hungary.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, the country currently receives Russian gas only via the southern route via Ankara.

Orban clarified that if a "pro-American leader" (Kemal Kilicdaroglu) had won, it was highly doubtful that the gas would have reached Hungary and Serbia. Erdogan became president of Türkiye until 2028.
