Minister Bayramov emphasises COP29 as catalyst for Azerbaijan-Pakistan cooperation

30 May 2024 13:10

Speaking alongside his Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Ishaq Dar at a joint press conference, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that COP29 presents fresh avenues for collaboration between Azerbaijan and Pakistan in the realm of clean energy and sustainable transition.

According to Report, Bayramov highlighted the potential benefits for Pakistani partners to leverage the favourable conditions and privileges offered by Azerbaijan's free economic zone "Alat".

Direct flights between the two countries also contribute to the expansion of tourism and people-to-people contacts. Currently, there are six flights a week from Baku to Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Last year, the number of Pakistani tourists travelling to Azerbaijan reached 55,000. In the first four months of 2024, this figure was about 20,000,’ the Minister said.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan's full support for Azerbaijan's chairmanship of COP29, affirming intentions to bolster cooperation in addressing climate change and promoting renewable energy initiatives.

"Congratulations to our brotherly country, Azerbaijan, for being selected to host the COP29 event in Baku city. In our meeting today, I told the Foreign Minister that Pakistan will fully support Azerbaijan during its chairmanship of COP29. We also discussed our cooperation and regional and global developments. Both our countries are firmly committed to international law. Pakistan and Azerbaijan have a long history of cooperation on multilateral platforms. We will continue to support each other in the future, including in the OIC and ECO. We appreciate Azerbaijan's consistent support," the Pakistani Foreign Minister said.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 29) will be held in Baku in November this year. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Within the framework of the event, the capital of Azerbaijan will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
