US, Saudi top diplomats discuss Sudan, Yemen, Gaza Crisis

18 June 2024 10:13

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud held a significant discussion on June 17, addressing pressing international issues including the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Yemen, and Gaza.

The conversation underscored the urgent need for collective international action to mitigate humanitarian crises and achieve lasting peace in these regions, Caliber.Az  reports citing the US Department of State's website.

According to a statement by Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Secretary Blinken expressed his "grave concern about the recent Houthi detentions of UN, diplomatic, and NGO staff, as well as their continued reckless attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden." This reflects ongoing US apprehensions over the destabilizing actions of the Houthi rebels, which have heightened tensions and disrupted international maritime activities.

The two leaders also focused on the dire situation in Sudan. Blinken and Prince Faisal emphasized the necessity for international cooperation to end the war in Sudan, which is currently experiencing the world's largest humanitarian crisis. "They discussed the urgent need for collective international action to end the war in Sudan and prevent famine and further atrocity," Miller stated.

The conversation further addressed the conflict in Gaza, with both officials underscoring efforts to secure a ceasefire, release hostages, and increase humanitarian aid. Blinken highlighted the importance of these measures for a sustainable post-conflict recovery. "The Secretary and the Foreign Minister addressed the ongoing efforts to achieve an enduring ceasefire in Gaza, secure the release of all hostages, and facilitate a surge in humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza," the spokesperson added.

Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia's continuous humanitarian support to Gaza, acknowledging the kingdom's role in alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people. "The Secretary thanked the Foreign Minister for Saudi Arabia’s continued delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people in Gaza," Miller conveyed.
