Iran calls for suspension of US membership in IAEA

Iran has called for the suspension of the United States’ membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), accusing Washington of violating the agency’s statute.

The Iranian delegation stated at the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna that in 2025 and 2026, the United States carried out large-scale aggressive actions against their country, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

According to them, this constitutes a serious violation of the principles of the UN Charter, international law and the IAEA Statute.

They also claimed that the United States, together with Israel, initiated “a total of 18 waves of attacks against Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

Shouldn’t the membership of such a country be suspended, as required by Article XIX.B, the Iranian diplomats asked.

Article XIX.B of the IAEA Statute provides for the suspension of the rights and privileges of membership of a state that has systematically violated the provisions of the statute or an agreement it has concluded with the agency.

The IAEA General Conference may take such a decision by a two-thirds majority following a recommendation from the Board of Governors.
