Audi CEO proposes car-free days amidst fuel price crisis
The CEO of Germany’s Audi automobile manufacturer has proposed the re-introduction of ‘car-free days’ as a way to ease the pressure of rising fuel prices amidst the ongoing energy crisis.
Markus Duesmann gave this suggestion during an interview with the German Süddeutsche Zeitung on October 26.
He noted that this would not be the first implementation of such a concept, recalling that Germany, together with several other European countries, had introduced such drastic limits on the use of vehicles in 1973 amidst the then-prevailing energy crisis. Back then, a complete ban on the use of cars existed on four Sundays together with a general speed limit reduction on Germany’s traditional limit-free highways.
"We have to adjust our thinking and get clarity, that our lives are changing. Considering money as 'the only means for change' will not be enough in this extraordinary situation", the auto giant's CEO said.
Duesmann enthusiastically told the publication, that he would gladly drive his racing bike on closed highways on such car-free Sundays.
