Azerbaijan's journey of progress: 21 years of Ilham Aliyev’s leadership

Today commemorates the 21st anniversary of Ilham Aliyev's election as President of Azerbaijan.

On October 1, 2003, national leader Heydar Aliyev, in an address to the Azerbaijani people, urged citizens to support Ilham Aliyev, first deputy chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), calling him his political successor, Caliber.Az reports.

In his speech, Heydar Aliyev described Ilham Aliyev as an intellectual, energetic leader with pragmatic thinking, and deeply knowledgeable about world politics and economics. He assured the nation that Ilham Aliyev, along with the New Azerbaijan Party, would make significant contributions to the development of the state and the well-being of the Azerbaijani people by bringing together the nation's most capable and dedicated citizens.

"I believe that with your help, Ilham Aliyev will accomplish the important tasks I could not finish. I have full confidence in him and high hopes for his future," the late leader emphasized.

Following Heydar Aliyev's call, the Azerbaijani people overwhelmingly supported Ilham Aliyev. In the presidential elections held on October 15, 2003, he secured more than 76% of the vote, marking the beginning of a new era for Azerbaijan.

Over the past 21 years, President Ilham Aliyev has delivered on his promises, driving rapid development across the nation. Under his leadership, Azerbaijan has seen vast improvements in various sectors, an enhanced standard of living, and the expansion of its political and economic influence. A modern military has been established, and Azerbaijan's standing on the global stage has been significantly bolstered. The country now plays a crucial role in all major international projects in the region, with a clear focus on safeguarding its national interests.

Today, with President Aliyev at the helm, Azerbaijan continues to experience robust economic growth. Construction and reconstruction efforts in Karabakh are progressing swiftly, and social programs are being implemented nationwide. All signs point to Karabakh soon becoming a thriving region, with displaced citizens safely returning to their ancestral homes.
