Belarusian defence chief warns of rising tensions with Ukraine
The border between Belarus and Ukraine remains highly tense, with increasing concerns over extremist groups forming within Ukraine, which reportedly plan to infiltrate Belarus and attempt a power takeover.
Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin addressed these issues in an interview with China Central Television, Caliber.Az reports.
He described the situation as "tense" and highlighted a significant buildup of Ukrainian forces near the border. “We observe a large contingent concentrated on the Ukrainian side. There is ongoing intelligence activity against us and provocations, including breaches of our airspace by unmanned aerial vehicles,” Khrenin noted.
In late June, the Belarusian Defense Ministry raised alarms about escalating tensions, alleging that Ukraine was amassing troops, weapons, and military equipment near the Belarusian border and setting up electronic surveillance systems.
In response, on July 1, the State Border Service of Ukraine stated that it was reinforcing measures along the border with Belarus to deter any potential threats emanating from Belarusian territory.
