Sweden to host NATO logistics base for northern Europe operations
Sweden has been selected as the site for a new NATO logistics headquarters in Enköping, which will oversee troop movements in Northern Europe and from North America, according to a government decision. Around 70 NATO personnel are expected to be employed at the facility.
Swedish Minister of Defence Pål Jonson highlighted the strategic significance of Sweden’s location, noting that the country would play a key role in NATO’s deterrence and defence. He emphasised that Sweden’s geographical position makes it crucial for the transport of resources and personnel across the region, Caliber.Az reports via SVT.
The Enköping base will manage potential troop movements on a divisional scale, accommodating up to 20,000 soldiers and handling supplies such as fuel, ammunition, and spare parts. In a possible conflict scenario, North American troops could be transported via Norwegian ports across Sweden and the Baltic Sea to support Finland and the Baltic states in response to a Russian attack.
Jonson explained that the base would facilitate rapid reallocation of large equipment and personnel from the West to the East in the event of a deteriorating security situation.
Swedish authorities are also preparing for potential threats, including sabotage and hybrid attacks, with Jonson indicating that countermeasures would involve close cooperation between Sweden’s security and intelligence services.
Commander-in-Chief Michael Claesson confirmed that the Swedish Armed Forces are actively planning the establishment of the base. He noted that Sweden’s responsibilities will extend beyond logistics to include contributions to advanced defence measures near the Russian border, including support for NATO front-line bases in Latvia and Finland.
Claesson emphasised that Sweden would continue to maintain a broad defence posture while supporting NATO operations, ensuring both logistical capabilities and active deterrence measures.
