US special envoy denies Washington aims to conquer Greenland
US President Donald Trump has no plans to take control of Greenland, according to his special envoy to the island, Jeff Landry, who dismissed claims that Washington is seeking to conquer the territory.
Landry said the United States does not aim to “conquer” Greenland but instead wants to hold talks with residents to understand their expectations and needs, Caliber.Az reports, citing Fox News.
“What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven't they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?” he said, stressing that the United States has “always been a welcoming party” and that the Trump administration does not intend to “take over anybody's country.”
Trump previously stated that the US must acquire Greenland, saying in December 2024 on Truth Social that ownership and control of the island are essential for national security.
In a January 2025 post, Trump described Greenland as an "incredible place" and said its people will "benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation," adding, "MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"
On December 21, the United States appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, a move that has reignited debate over US intentions toward the semi‑autonomous Danish territory and drawn strong diplomatic pushback.
Denmark and Greenland’s leaders have jointly rejected any notion of the US taking over the island, insisting that territorial integrity under international law must be respected and that Greenlanders alone should decide their future.
The European Union has publicly backed Denmark and Greenland, stressing the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity while affirming solidarity with both in response to the US envoy appointment.
