EU to form group to boost its defence capabilities, foreign policy chief says

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has announced the creation of a high-level group comprising former political and military leaders from EU countries, the UK and Ukraine to explore new approaches to strengthening the bloc’s defence capabilities and responding to growing military threats.

Speaking ahead of an informal meeting of EU defence ministers, she noted that Ukraine’s experience in defence and innovation should also inform the group’s work, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.

She stressed that Europe should not seek to fully replicate US capabilities but instead focus on defending its territory and developing its own strengths.

The group will begin its work next week, with a focus on how Europe can more effectively ensure its own security amid pressure from the United States for European countries to take greater responsibility.
