North Korean leader inspects facility developing "secret" submarine weapons PHOTO
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has visited a facility involved in the development of new submarine weaponry, reviewing the progress of research and design work.
The visit aligns with Pyongyang’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities, including the expansion of its naval forces, Caliber.Az reports via the Korean Central Telegraph Agency (KCTV).
Kim inspected the construction site of a nuclear-powered submarine reportedly intended to carry strategic guided missiles. During the visit, he emphasised the importance of reinforcing maritime defence and enhancing the operational potential of the Korean People’s Navy.
The agency reported that Kim “closely reviewed research work on new secret underwater weapons” and outlined strategic plans for reorganising naval forces and establishing new units, although technical details of the systems under development were not disclosed.
These developments come amid regional discussions. Following the Gyeongju summit in late October, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for South Korea’s potential construction of a nuclear-powered submarine. Later, South Korea’s presidential national security advisor, Wi Sung-lak, indicated that Seoul and Washington had agreed on the need for a separate agreement regarding nuclear submarines.
