Belgium says EU has no plans to deprive Hungary of voting rights

30 December 2023 18:18

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo has said that the European Union has no plans to strip Hungary of its voting rights over alleged violations of the rule of law.

In mid-December, the Financial Times, citing sources reported that Brussels is considering the option of depriving Hungary of its voting rights in the EU in response to Budapest’s veto on new military aid allocations to Ukraine, de Croo said in his interview with Soir.

According to De Croo, some measures have been taken by the European Commission.

"Actually, Hungary has made some progress. Should we continue? Yes, that is very clear,” said the Belgian prime minister.

At a summit in Brussels in December, Hungary vetoed an expansion of the European Union’s multi-annual budget for 2024-2027, including €50 billion in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.
