Biden names newest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in honor of Clinton, Bush Jr.
US President Joe Biden has named two newest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, whose construction has not yet begun, after his predecessors, Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
“I am proud to announce that the next two Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be named for two former presidents: Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. When I personally delivered the news to Bill and George, they were deeply humbled,” Biden said in a statement published on the White House website, according to Caliber.Az.
The future USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and USS George W. Bush (CVN 83) will be the next additions to the Gerald R. Ford-class carriers.
Biden emphasized the shared understanding between Clinton and Bush of the immense responsibilities carried by the Commander-in-Chief, particularly in regard to the sacrifices made by military families. "Each knows firsthand the weight of the responsibilities that come with being Commander-in-Chief. And both know well our duty to support the families and loved ones who wait and worry for the safe return of their servicemembers."
The two carriers will join the most advanced and capable Navy fleet, intended to defend both American interests abroad and safeguard national security at home. They will be manned by a diverse group of Sailors from all across the United States.
“Those Sailors will demonstrate not only the example of our power, but the power of our example,” Biden added. "Our nation remains grateful to them, their families, and all the talented shipyard workers who will bring these ships to life."
In his remarks, Biden concluded with a heartfelt prayer for those who will serve aboard these vessels and all military personnel: "May God protect all who sail aboard USS William J. Clinton, USS George W. Bush and every other ship in our fleet. And may God continue to bless our troops."
