Bloomberg: India opposes turning BRICS into anti-US alliance
The Indian government is not enthusiastic about the prospect of transforming BRICS into an alliance that opposes the United States, especially with Russia and China taking leading roles.
This perspective comes from Indian officials acquainted with the situation, Caliber.Az reports citing Bloomberg's article.
Consequently, India stands against further expansion of the organization, a position echoed by fellow founding members Brazil and South Africa. Additionally, the initiative has been entirely rejected by the UAE, which, having joined BRICS, enjoys strong ties with the West.
The hesitance among most BRICS members to confront the dollar's dominance is underscored by the absence of finance ministers and central bank governors from China, India, and South Africa at a recent meeting in Moscow, which occurred prior to the Kazan summit.
Wang Yiwei, director of the Center for European Studies at Renmin University of China in Beijing, points out that the Russian proposal to circumvent the dollar in transactions appears overly ambitious even for China. Moreover, the other BRICS nations are not subject to Western sanctions, diminishing their incentive to entirely overhaul the global order.
Leaders from 32 countries, along with senior officials from regional organizations and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, are set to participate in the three-day summit beginning today, October 22 in Kazan, as announced by Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will join President Putin, along with leaders from newly inducted BRICS members Iran, Egypt, the UAE, and Ethiopia. Putin also intends to hold bilateral meetings with many of these leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
On a related note, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has cancelled his plans to attend the summit due to a head injury sustained in an accident at home; however, officials have confirmed he will participate via video link.
